What do I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable, modest clothing. (Shorts are ok, but please no “short-shorts”)
When should I arrive?
If you are coming for the first time, you are encouraged to pre-arrange an orientation through that group’s contact person. The length of the orientation may vary from group to group, but is generally 30 minutes. If you do not need an orientation, please arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the meditation or service begins. This allows for a smoother transition into the meditation or service both for you and for the rest of those in attendance.
Does it cost anything to attend the group meetings?
There is no set fee for attending any group at Ekoji. However, you are encouraged to donate to our Sangha to the amount you feel appropriate if you are so moved. Dana, or generosity, is an important aspect of the spiritual path, benefitting the giver as well as the recipient.
Do you have to be Buddhist to go to Ekoji?
No. People from all religious backgrounds and affiliations, as well as those who have no religious affiliation, are welcome and encouraged to attend our groups. The Buddha always welcomed anyone willing to listen, with no pressure to “convert.” If the teachings speak to you, you will follow them; if not, that’s ok, too.
Do I have to know how to meditate?
No. As mentioned above, newcomers are encouraged to arrange an orientation/meditation instruction through the group’s contact person before the actual meditation. This is especially true for those who have little or no meditation experience, or familiarity with Buddhist teachings.
